AP Brave New World paper (sweidenaar.homework@blogger.com)

Brave New World

Writing assignment

In a well-written paper, please present a well-thought argument on one of these topics.  Use the text liberally to support your argument, and please make sure that it is well-thought and well-written.  This paper should be 3 pages in length and is Tuesday, March 20, 2012

1.     Examine the setting of the novel.  When and where is the novel set? What do these settings represent?  And how is the setting important to the dialog and plot of the novel?

2.     Compare and contrast the way Huxley treats the issue of power and class with another writer you’ve read this year (Fitzgerald, Hesse, Orwell, etc…).

3.     What role does suffering play in the society of Brave New World?

4.     How has John been conditioned?  How is his conditioning similar to the other characters of the new world?  How does his conditioning contribute to the ending of the novel?

5.     Brave New World shapes a distinctive argument about religion, what is that argument and what are your thoughts on it?

6.     Why does Mustapha Mond continue to do what he does?  Especially after what he tells Bernard and Helmoltz in the final chapters?

7.     What allows Bernard’s final end, and what allows Helmholtz’s?  Why are they different ends for a similar situation?

8.     To what degree does the novel condemn science in our world?

9.     In what ways does the novel subject the world of science to human passion?  Is this a fair subjection?
