1. There are few times that in this chapter when Gatsby comes face to face with Tom Buchanon. During these times Gatsby seems quite aggressive with his comments, something out of character for him, why do you think that is? Think this through, do not respond that Gatsby is trying to steal Daisy from Tom, that is obvious, but what else is going on here? What is Gatsby enacting with his aggressiveness?

Sorry I forgot to post the questions from Chapter 5, here they are:

1. 1. When Nick returns to his house at the beginning of the chapter, all the lights are on in Gatsby’s house. Gatsby has a strange reason for this, he has a strange reason for everything. Can you connect this reason with Nick’s thought at the end of the chapter that, “No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man can store up in his ghostly heart (101)”?

2. 2. When Gatsby meets Daisy he knocks a clock slightly askew causing a strange reaction from him and Daisy. Then, Klipspringer is dragged out to play that song on page 101, which also mentions time. What is the significance of time in this chapter?

In a 3-4 page paper, discuss the effect that Mark Twain achieved by having Huck tell his own story. Be sure to quote and discuss numerous passages of the novel where the effect of the narration is achieved. Be certain to also consider the discussions and writing we have had/done about narration and the short paper you wrote on the narration of King of the Hill. Also, you can venture into talking about the nature of meta-narratives and the effect that the meta-narrative has on the novel, but this is an optional excursion. Another optional excursion that might be helpful to your writing process in a consideration of Hemingway’s quote, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn.”
