Monday's class and assignment for Wednesday

There are two types of sonnets--we took some notes on each type.  We took the notes on the attached page, you can refer to page 312-313 for most of the notes about Shakespearean sonnets.

Your assignment is to read sonnet 73 & 116 on pages 318 & 319 and to answer the questions and write poetry focus statements for both sonnets.

Here is what a poetry focus statement is and consists of:

Definition-a one sentence summary of a poem that can serve as a thesis

1. Expresses the title and the author
2. Expresses the narrative/situation (what is happening in the poem).
3. Expresses the figurative & thematic levels of the poem and the poem's meaning (the poetic techniques).
4. Expresses the tones of the poem.

sonnet 73 & 116

vocab list 15

Here's an example focus statement,

William Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 wonders what a fitting comparison is for his beloved, the sonnet shows the joy the poet has for his love and how summer is not a fitting comparison this is a metaphor; in the end the only this that would fit his love is a poem.
